Crispy air fryer onion rings are a great finger food for parties, too, and boy do we love a party full of tasty finger foods and treats! Using our air fryer to cook frozen foods is so simple and the method we use most for cooking pizza, frozen chicken nuggets, frozen corn dogs and frozen fish sticks.
Why You'll Love Air Frying Frozen Onion Rings
- It takes less than 10 minutes to make onion rings crispy when they're air fried.
- They turn out perfectly golden brown and crisp without the need for deep frying in all that oil - so no messy stove!
Ingredients
All you need to cook air fryer frozen onion rings is a bag of frozen onion rings. Nathan's onion rings are our favorite brand, but we love Alexia onion rings too. You'll also need oil to coat the basket so they don't stick.
How To Cook Frozen Onion Rings In An Air Fryer
Just 3 simple steps is what it takes to cook onion rings in the air fryer.
- Preheat the air fryer to 380℉/194℃. If your air fryer does not require preheating, skip this step.
- Brush the air fryer basket or tray with a small amount of pure oil. Working in batches, place the frozen onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer with space between so they do not touch.
- Air fry for 8-10 minutes, until onion rings are golden brown and the internal temperature has reached 165℉.
Using tongs, remove the cooked onion rings from the air fryer. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such ketchup, pizza sauce, marinara sauce or mayonnaise.
Tips from the Chef
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce: we love eating fried onion rings with ketchup, but there are so many options. Marinara sauce, pizza sauce, yum yum sauce, chick-fil-a sauce, are other possibilities.
Season the onion rings: give them a little extra kick by sprinkling on some french fry seasoning or salt, pepper garlic seasoning.
Don't overcrowd the basket: frozen onion rings should be air fried in a single layer for the best outcome. Overlapping cause them to cook unevenly and the touching pieces of breading won't turn as crispy as you might like.
Recipe FAQs
If you're air frying the onion rings on a basket tray with holes or a shelf, there is no need to flip them. The air will flow strongly and evenly around them. But if you're air frying the onion rings on solid pan or tray, you will need to flip them for them to crisp evenly on all sides.
To prevent the frozen onion rings from sticking, it's a good idea to lightly coat the air fryer basket or try with oil. There is no need to spray the onion rings with oil unless that's your preference.
Frozen onion rings should be air fried at 380 degrees Fahrenheit or 194 degrees Celsius.
Leftover onion rings can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. They can be reheated in the air fryer. Once cooked, they should not be refrozen.
Reheating Onion Rings In The Air Fryer
If your air fryer has the reheat setting, set it to reheat for 3-5 minutes. If your air fryer does not have the reheat setting, set the temperature to 260 degrees Fahrenheit and reheat for 3-5 minutes.
